Before you leave
- Start a group for the trip and add everyone. Friends on Mull join when they accept your request; anyone else you can add by name.
- Ask everyone to add their UPI ID to their own profile. It takes a minute, and it means Pay works for all of you at the end.
Add it as you go
Whoever pays adds it: the villa, the scooters, the dinner, the petrol. It takes a few seconds, and it works without signal, so the beach shack with no network isn’t a problem. Mull catches up when you’re back online.
Add things the same day. By Thursday, nobody remembers who paid for the ferry.
When it isn’t equal
Most of a trip splits equally. The rest doesn’t, so Mull splits four ways:
- Equally, between only the people who were there. Two of you went parasailing? Split it between the two.
- Exactly, when you know each person’s amount, like the friend who only had a drink.
- By shares, when a couple counts as two, or someone came for half the week.
- By percent, when you agreed a split before you left.
Every split is in whole rupees that add back up to the bill, however many of you there are.
A worked example

Mull keeps each debt between the two people it’s between. So when Sahil opens it at the end, he sees three numbers:

Three taps on Pay, each opening his UPI app with the amount and UPI ID filled in, and each balance clears as the person he paid confirms it arrived.
Settling up
Once you’re home, everyone opens Mull and sees what they owe and are owed, person by person. Tap Pay next to a name and your UPI app opens with everything filled in. The person you paid gets a notification, confirms it arrived, and that’s settled.
For anyone slow to pay, one tap sends a friendly reminder with the right amount, so nobody has to type “hey, about Goa…”.

Questions
What if someone isn’t on Mull?
Add them by name and split with them straight away. It works best once they join, though: then they add what they paid, confirm what you sent and get the reminders themselves.
Can we pay as we go, not at the end?
Yes. Pay whenever you like. Each payment counts once the person paid confirms it arrived.
Does the trip mix with our flat’s money?
Only where it should. Each group keeps its own ledger, and what you owe each person is netted across all of them, so you pay one amount, not two.
