Why people look for another app
Splitwise is where most groups start, and it does a lot well. What sends people looking is mostly what now sits behind its paid plan. On its own Pro page, Splitwise lists unlimited expenses and a totally ad-free experience among the things Pro adds, so the free plan limits how many expenses you add and shows ads. Pro is a subscription, sold on the Indian App Store at several prices, from ₹49 to ₹1,399 depending on the plan.
The other is paying back. Splitwise’s App Store listing names Paytm as its payment option in India. Most groups here pay with whichever UPI app each person already uses.
What Mull does differently
- Free, with no ads. There’s no paid plan, and no limit on how many expenses you add.
- Pay opens your UPI app. Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or whichever you use, with the amount and their UPI ID already filled in.
- A payment counts when it lands. The person who paid says so, and the person who was paid confirms it arrived. Only then does the balance move.
- Each debt stays between the two people in it. What you owe each friend is netted across every group you share, automatically, and Mull never has you pay someone you didn’t owe to make the maths tidier.
- Rent that asks before it adds. A repeating bill comes up with its amount ready to change, and what you confirm becomes the new normal.
- UPI IDs come from their owners. Everyone adds their own, so nobody pays a stranger because of someone else’s typo.

When Splitwise is the better pick
If some of your group are on Android, Splitwise works for them today, and Mull is on iPhone only for now. The same goes for a trip that runs in several currencies, or anyone who wants to split from a web browser. For a group in India that pays over UPI, that’s what Mull is built for.
Moving your group across
- Settle what’s open in Splitwise, if you can. Starting clean is simplest.
- If something is still owed, carry it across as one expense in Mull: paid by the person who is owed, split exactly to whoever owes it.
- Send your friends a request from Mull. Once they accept, add them to the group. Anyone not on Mull yet can be added by name.
- Everyone adds their own UPI ID in their profile, so Pay works for all of you.
Questions
Is Mull really free?
Yes. There’s no paid plan and no ads, and your data is never sold.
Do my friends need Mull too?
They should. With everyone on Mull, they add what they paid, confirm what you sent and get your reminders themselves. If someone won’t install it yet, you can still split with them by name.
Is Mull on Android?
Not yet. Mull is coming to iPhone first, in India. Android comes later.
Can I import my Splitwise groups?
Not yet. Settle up or carry balances across as above; it takes a few minutes for most groups.
